Russula subfragiliformis Murr. Cap 5-8cm across, convex; red to pinkish red; smooth, slightly viscid; peeling almost completely. Gills widely spaced; deep ochre. Stem 20-50 x 10-15mm, equal; white to partly pink. Flesh white. Odor none. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, 6-8 x 5-7.5µ; warts 0.5-1µ high, few connectives. Deposit medium ochre (E-F). Habitat under hardwoods. Uncommon. Found in eastern North America from New Jersey to Florida. Season July-August. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) |
